This is the story of the Pacifist German Writer Erich Maria Remarque, his love for beautiful women: his Love story with the actress Marlene Dietrich and his Love story with the actress Paulette Goddard, later his wife. In 1951, the writer Erich Maria Remarque met the Hollywood actress Paulette Goddard in New York, igniting the last great passion of this colourful figure, whose lovers had included the iconic actress Marlene Dietrich. Through the accounts of former acquaintances and the music of the time, this documentary recreates the atmosphere of Remarque’s relationship with Paulette at Casa Monte Tabor, at Ronco, on the Swiss part of Lake Maggiore, and explores his life as a heavy drinker, pursued by the ghosts of a lost generation, destroyed in the flower of their youth by a war that promoted the myth of heroic death. Remarque, however, was always a “militant pacifist”, brave and uncompromising. Having returned alive but shattered from the trenches and hell of the Western Front, he never budged an inch from his controversial ideas.
